PORTLAND and SEATTLE Recap 13/01

Transport Yourself is back! First show of the new year! First show of the new term! First two hour show! First time on the new system! Its a day of firsts!

Oh boy. The new system! Well, what a kerfuffle that was! Really, it's impossible to explain it on air or on this but there has been a mighty big change. It's very different to the 'old system' and twill definitely take some time getting used to it. I do think the new myriad is good, and it is more professional and it'll sound better on air but sometimes, change is what you really, really don't want.

Made the show a bit of a mess, I will admit that, so apologies! Meant I played more songs from one band rather than lots of songs from more bands - but that's not necessarily a bad thing!

Anyway, time to recap! Portland and Seattle? What great, vibrant, music-filled cities!

Firstly let's set the scene. If there's a blueprint for a successful 21st- century city, Portland must surely be it. This zany but precocious mini-metropolis stands at the cutting edge of all that's cool, hop and forward- thinking about modern America. I didn't mention this on the show, but I really truly would love to live in Portland for a couple of months. I have this great American plan but it's all up in the air so won't be revealing anything just yet!

As Portland has been a hotbed of indie music since the mid 1990's this is what I played: (And no, not in order.)

Death Cab for Cutie- I Will Possess Your Heart
Death Cab for Cutie- Soul Meets Body
The Shins- New Slang
The Shins- Girl Inform Me
Fleet Foxes- Your Protector
YACHT- Psychic City
YACHT - Summer Song
Pavement-
She & Him
The Decemberists- Hazards of Love
The Decemberists- The Wanting Comes in Waves
Modest Mouse- Broke
Starfucker- Myke Ptyson
Starfucker- German Love
Elliot Smith- Coast to Coast
Elliot Smith- Speed Trials

Vondelpark- Jetlag Blue Version (actually from Surrey, UK but I had to make an exception: my first show since I found out about him and he just had to feature on it)

The doughnuts I was talking about? Voodoo Doughnuts, check 'em out here: they really aren't your average doughnut wwww.voodoodoughnut.com

I also mentioned the film Wendy and Lucy which has a pretty basic plot, but Michelle Williams is fantastic in it and its very ascetically pleasing. Also mentioned Zooey Deschanel, of She & Him who plays in 500 Days of Summer and I am absolutely not ashamed to admit that I love this film. The graphics are truly great.

Welcome to Portland. While you’re here, why not eat an erotic doughnut, stalk indie stars, hike a volcano, fuck the system, kiss a vegan, grab a coffee, and write a zine about it all.

To end with, enjoy the Wendy and Lucy trailer
